I'm Perplexed

Dear Mom,

I’m perplexed. I can cook a French gourmet dinner for two, or prepare enough food for one hundred people for a surprise party for my husband without him knowing. I can transform a mud pile into a gardener’s delight, or sew a prom dress with the complexity of a bride’s gown in less than two weeks. I can move out of a home in one afternoon (okay, with some help) without the (now ex) husband having a clue. I can provide day care for 5 four year olds and 4 under the age of two in diapers, along with my three children without losing my mind, errr… okay, well, maybe I was a bit nuts by the end of the day and made a mental note—never do that again. I can change the oil in my car or I can unstop a toilet—the list is endless. But when it comes to making a DVD play on the TV, I’m lost.

Logically thinking, hitting “play” on the remote would work. Notta. After an hour and a half of hitting every button on all four remotes—yes, four remotes, nothing. Zip. I even hit the play button on the DVD player. Nothing worked. I gave up. I wanted to toss it all out of the window, but instead I grabbed a book, curled up in bed and read. God forbid if I ever have to use a Kindle.

So what’s the deal? Why can’t I hit play to watch a movie? Tell me mom, what is the lesson for me to learn?

  1. I can so relate to not being able to play a dvd -- I can't keep the remotes straight either! Why does it have to be so complicated to do such a simple thing? Technology....

  2. Sister, I am right there with you! My husband says two buttons is one too many for me. He's right.

  4. Really? You can change your own oil and cook gourmet meals? You can do all that stuff and you're worried about the DVD? LOL Feel sorry for me. I can't do any of the cool stuff you can do...AND I can't operate the T.V. and DVD remotes. I can, um, type really fast and I excel as a laundress. *sigh* Not as cool as oil changing and sewing a prom dress.

  5. LOL! I am in love with this post. What really made me laugh was the picture of the four remotes. Hilarious!

Lynn, you are an amazing person. Technology can get the best of all of us.

  6. Thanks all - after I thought about this post, I was thinking, geez, nothing like bragging about myself. My only point was that I'm capable of doing a lot of things, but simple techy stuff... it escapes me. My daughter Rita, the next day goes up and hits one button and the movie plays! For crying out loud. I kid you not, I hit that button two times and each time it started the whole thing over again. I just don't have the touch!

  7. Lynn, I can relate to this! I laughed when I saw the photo of all the remotes, because my husband uses about that many to play one DVD. First he clicks this button on one, then that button on another, then back to the first remote, etc. Then he wonders why I can never remember which buttons in which order on which remotes he clicked! When he's not home, I just don't watch TV. At least, like you, I catch up on the reading. :)

  8. I claim the title of Queen Tech-Know-Not, so you're coming to the wrong person for advice. Relying on anyone under the age of 25 usually helps for me.
