What’s in Your Purse/Pocket?

Dear Mom,

If you were alive, I’d have you dump out your purse so I could see what’s in it.

Writer and critique friend, Sioux shared some food for thought by asking what would one of the characters in my story (that the group has graciously agreed to read in its entirety) have in her pocket or purse?

For starters, I decided to dump out the contents of my purse and take a look. I had downsized to a smaller purse so I wouldn’t be carrying around unneeded, extra things. The bigger the purse, the more one stuffs into it, right? And even in the downsized purse I was surprised to find so much. Here’s my list:

·      checkbook
·      mini composition notebook
·      3 pens (I sighed with relief because one time I didn't have a single pen in my purse!)
·      cell phone
·      pack of Bubblemint gum (my favorite)
·      tiny bottle of lotion (from recent visit at the Dermatologist)
·      tiny tube of lotion (from same visit)
·      car faub
·      2 gift cards (from hubby)
·      a coupon  (hair salon)
·      3 bandaids (which I’ve discovered I’m allergic to)
·      cash/coins (usually I have no cash, and just noticed the 2012 penny)
·      small wallet (when you have a small purse, you carry small things)
·      2 lip glosses
·      panty liner
·      fingernail file
·      scandisk usb thingy
·      tissues
·      dental floss
·      3 chewed pieces of gum wrapped in gum wrapper
·      appointment card with list on back
·      6 loose gum wrappers
·      2 bobby pins
·      receipt from restaurant
·      hand santizer

If I were to take a peek in my pockets, I’m sure I’d find a tissue and chapstick. I’ll confess, I’m a chapstick/tissue addict. I'm not sure what all of this says about me.

Now I’d like you to dump out your purse or pockets and share with me what is in there.

Please.

I’m curious is all, and well… it might help me with my story. If I use some item from your purse, I’ll make sure to mention you in the acknowledgements. How's that for a bribe?

I may want to disqualify my older sister because whatever you might need—anything—and you ask her, she’ll pull it out of her purse. I kid you not.

She’d be a winner on that one game show, The Price is Right. Every now and then the host of the show would call out to the audience asking for some odd item found in a purse and they'd get some money. “Who has a blue screwdriver in the shape of a bird in their purse?” I’d see my sister jump up, “I do! I do!”

Oh, and in case you're wondering what that pink thing is pinned on my purse... a vagina pin, made by my daughter, Rita to support her sister, Jessica and her nonprofit organization, AlphaWom. But the pins became a hit for women diagnosed with cervical cancer too... thanks to Shelley!

So what’s in your wallet/purse/pocket?

  1. Just caught this on the way out and want to answer. I have same things as you minus the gum and in addition: cell phone charger, purse hook (for hanging from table to avoid floor), calendar, dental floss, Tylenol, and a bib! Also today I have my Kindle!

  2. That's a lot of stuff in your purse. Now in a flagrant attempt to get myself on an acknowledgement page:

    - A purse with money, bank card, membership cards etc
    - spare glasses
    - glasses cleaner and cloth
    - glasses repair kit
    - moisturizing lotion
    - nail file
    - pouch with migraine medication
    - small torch
    - keys
    - hair bands
    - train ticket (momento of first date with Mr M)
    - panty-liners
    - face powder
    - compact mirror
    - chewing gum
    - headphones
    - memory sticks

Ah. I've got a lot of stuff too.

  3. What a great idea! Lynn, you and I are a LOT alike! I have so many of the same items! I have a chapstick/hand lotion addiction. And I have some of Ellie's, too: glasses repair kit & migraine medicine! Two things I CANNOT live without!! :)
Oh, and just sayin' ... It's Let's Make a Deal that gave money for weird things in purses. I always remember the hard boiled egg!

  4. Thanks Bookie and Ellie!
Becky, I wondered if I had the right game show... oh well, I tried.

  5. Just two pens and my wallet. But, I changed purses a couple of days ago, so I'm kind of cheating.

  6. I am going to choose my pocket, because my purse is too pathetic and scary to excavate.

A folded-up dollar bill, a peppermint I snagged from a student, and a receipt from Barnes and Noble.

I imagine none of this will make it into your novel. Oh well...

  7. In my pockets when I walk the dog: keys, cell phone, water bottle, MP3 player, plastic bags.

The list of what's in my purse would be too long.

  8. Other than the usual checkbook, wallet, appointment book? Well, emory board, nail clipper, my cat's rabies certificate, three postage stamps, one lifesaver (still in roll), six rubber bands, two colored pencils (colors Orchid and Tiger Tail), a six-penny nail, hand-held tape recorder, zip drive,Sea Dogs Brewery coaster, bumblebee wind-up toy and, most mysteriously, a pair of reading glasses (I do not use reading glasses).

  9. I opened this and read it as soon as I saw it pop up in my Google Reader - then only have time to comment now :)

So, off to see what's in my purse.

You are completely right, Lynn, the bigger the purse, the more one stuffs into it. Luckily, I also downsized a few months ago. I had the same findings as you did however, there's still so much in there!

    Here's my purse's contents:
    - one pen (I usually have two. And recall forgetting the other in a shop when I signed the form from selling my crafts...)
    - chapstick
    - homemade lip balm
    - one earring (I have three in my ears)
    - mobile phone
    - tissue paper
    - wallet (which I won't empty now but has business cards, bus pass, and no money at the moment)
    - stranded bus ticket used at both ends
    - bus ticket used at one end
    - unused bus ticket
    - bobby pin
    - hair clip
    - stranded tissue
    - headset for my phone
    - pamphlet
    - small fabric groceries bag
    - panty liner
    - tampax
    - hand sanitizer
    - cleaning tissue for my glasses
    - piece of paper with scribbling on it (illegible)

  10. Okie-dokie! (I always loved that part of Let's Make a Deal!) I have larger purse now than I used to. This is what I found:

    *Two sets of keys.
    *One smartphone.
    *One good camera.
*One wallet that you can't scan thru.
    *Two checkbooks.
*A set of vintage hair pins from Cary's Grandma Pearl (because I am growing out my bangs).
    *A pair of earrings.
*A rain-check from Bi Mart for a printer on sale.
    *A small spiral notebook.
    *An emery board.
*A zippered pouch from when my Mom visited Germany that holds my extra camera batteries.
    *A small zippered coin purse.
    *3 ink pens.
    *A small legal pad.
    *Blank index cards (50)
    *Cary's business cards.
    *My business cards.
    *1 rubber band.
    *2 large paper clips.
    *Two shopping lists.
    *3 receipts.
*1 business card for the local florist.
*1 note to print out certain pics.
*2 small Excedrin bottles (now collectors items) full of various over the counter meds.
*A book order for my upcoming GIVE-A-WAY!!!!

I did have a book in there, but I took it out to read it.

That was fun! Hope I gave you some ideas for your story, Lynn.

    Hugs,

    Kathy M.

*** Now I'll reorganize my purse, but really, besides a few notes and receipts, it is all going back in there.

  11. Interesting post! The contents of my bag are simple:

    (1) wallet
    (2) moleskin pocket notebook
    (3) pen
    (4) phone

(I usually put my key and lip stuff in my pocket.)

  12. Oh dear, oh dear. Way too much! Overstuffed wallet/checkbook combo, pens, small pad of paper, comb, business cards (mine and others), coupons, badge, ibuprofen, dozens of debit card receipts (all crumpled, crinkled, and barely readable), key chain with at least 10 keys (I don't know what most of them unlock), iPhone, recharging cord, and makeup bag.

No wonder my shoulder always aches from hauling all this stuff around!

@Donna, would sure like to know what's in your purse.
@Deb, the toy is interesting. And thanks for stopping by.
Okay @ everyone - thanks for stopping by.
@Estrella, it is amazing how much one can stuff even in a small purse.
@Kathy, I like the vintage hair pins from Grandma Pearl.
@Victoria, you run a close second with Mama Zen.
@Pat, the heaviness of a purse is a big reason why I downsized... it is tough on the shoulder!

  15. Oh my. Just remember, you asked. I once did a blog post on my 15 pens. So 15 pens (so I can find ONE). Also: 2 packets of mosquito repellant towelettes, checkbook, billfold, card case, tissues, reading glasses, hand sanitizer, 2 bottles of nasal spray, lotion, crunched-up Post It with measurements, fabric swatch, 2 dried-up lipsticks I didn't know I still had, car keys, breath strips, and a cosmetic case containing a mini-pharmacy of aspirin, Advil congestion, No Doz, Tide to Go, cough drops, "Happy" solid perfume stick, Beano, panty liner, mini emery boards, mirror/brush combo, more breath strips, and 2 Band-aids.

  16. Your post reminded me of a humor piece I wrote a few years ago when I was a columnist for Sanity Central. I called it "Personal Purse Phylogeny" and it detailed the difference in the contents of a female's purse from age 3 through age 63. I may have to dig that out again and recycle it. :) In my purse now...jeez. Set of keys, Burt's Bees lip balm, 8 pens, notepad, measuring tape, Aleve and ibuprofen, business cards (2 different ones), three different pairs of prescription glasses (sunglasses, regular glasses and reading glasses), wallet, checkbook, tampons, and chewable Pepto Bismol! Oh yeah, and a receipt for the veterinary bill I paid today. There may be more at the bottom, but I'm afraid to reach in that far. :)

  20. @Tammy, love the Beano
@Lisa, would love to read the article you wrote AND Tammy has you beat with the 15 pens (not this time) and I'm impressed with 8.
@Rita, I know you'd never downsize to a smaller person and I want to see your homemade heating pad.

  21. What a great blog? As a little girl I was fascinated with the contents of Mom's purse, so your blog is so right on. Mom's purse was a basic black one with hand-held rounded handles and a gold-clasp enclosure. To this day when I smell Juicy Fruit gum I am pulled back into those little-girl days and immediately feel the Mom-ness that was unique to her. Along with the gum, there was a cloth hanky with a rose pattern, a wallet with her driver's license and a few bills and a few coins, a red lipstick (yeah, Mom!), a compact, a comb, and matches. (The smokes went in there only when she was leaving the house.) Usually before I could investigate too long, she would shoo me away from her purse since I never really had permission to open it in the first place.

  23. Mom did you mean to tell me that i will never downsize to a smaller person? Or is this some sort of freudian slip?
