Dear Mom,
Friday the 13th sparks memories of you. You gave birth to me on that day--the day you said we both nearly died. For whatever reason, I considered it to be a lucky day. We lived.
When you died on Friday the 13th, my thinking changed a little. Okay, a lot. I figured as a child, I must be unlucky and somehow caused your death. But over time I wondered whether it was your way of saying, "I'm off to a better place - it's my lucky day." I held on to the idea of Friday the 13th being lucky.
Since Norm and I share the same birthday, we decided to get married on that day. Wouldn't you know, the year we made it official, it was Friday the 13th.
Friday the 13th is a lucky day for me. I think it's all in the attitude. What do you think about Friday the 13th?

I think you might be able to write a "holiday" story for Becky Haigler and Silver Boomer Books about Friday the 13th. What do you think of that idea?
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn. I always love your letters to your Mom; you are such a sweet girl.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was also born on Friday the 13th, so it was one of lucky day's too. I've never had much of a problem with that day one way or another.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend,
Kathy M.
Aww, Lynn, I love your letters to Mom. Friday the 13th has always been lucky for me, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sioux, I'll give that some thought.
ReplyDeleteKathy, you have a great weekend too.
Thank you Linda!
It's always been a lucky day for me, and thirteen has always been my lucky number. No triskadekaphobia here!
ReplyDeleteYou've proven that perspective trumps superstition. Lucky 13 it is.
ReplyDeleteAmazing that you have so many notables on Friday the 13th!
ReplyDeleteI finally got the piece into the mailbox this afternoon...had it ready all week, but have stayed tucked in due to rain. Stormy tonight...thought I should get it to YOUR side of the state!
I agree with you. Friday the 13th has been lucky more often than not for me.

ReplyDeleteI've never thought much of Friday the 13th. Now when I do, I'll think of you. Wonderful post, as usual.

Love your positive outlook, Lynn! For some reason, I always get a little nervous when I know a Friday the 13th is looming, but once it's here, I forget about it. I agree with Sioux...would make a great essay/article/submission!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. My mother died when I was young too and often i will have conversations in my head with her, though sometimes i am not sure what she would have said so they do tend to be one sided. like a letter..I found you in Roberts comments.. cecilia
ReplyDeleteI love that you turned a day that was painful to remember into a day that brings you happiness. Sometimes, it's a hard thing to do in life. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth - I'll have to give Sioux's idea some more thought.
ReplyDeleteCecilia, thanks for stopping by and for commenting.
E.B. - thank you!
Great post, Mom!
ReplyDeleteI always liked Friday the 13th :) Lucky indeed!
