Happy Birthday All June Babies!

I have been drawing birthday cakes for family and close friends for their birthdays. If you’ve had a birthday this month and you weren’t mentioned, and feel a little sad about that, then consider this yours!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE!

Happy Birthday Mark!

Mark is another grade school friend. There’s a group of us who have managed to stay in touch on a pretty regular basis. In grade school, I always thought Mark would be some kind of actor or in the movie business… and I was right. He’s made movies and writes screenplays and writes for television. And it hasn’t gone to his head… he’s still nice. Happy Birthday Mark!

WHOLE

-->
Have you ever looked at the word whole and really thought about it? And if you took off the W, you have a hole. Is there such a thing as a whole hole?

Now that’s a whole donut.

DECOMPOSITION

Did you know that the decomposition of raw potatoes will happen in water, in the fridge? They virtually disappear.

Happy Birthday Sophia!

Sophia is my great niece. She’s a spitting image of her mother when her mom was her age. Since I don’t get to see Sophia too often, I can remember one of the first times, I was so impressed because she was like a little adult, carrying on a conversation hundred times better than I could as an adult. She raises goats, takes them to fairs and wins! And with the winnings, buys another goat and starts all over. I’ll show my ignorance about goats, but I think a baby one is called a kid. And the first time I heard a goat ‘whining’ I seriously thought it was a human kid having a fit. Scared the crap out of me as I thought they had some poor child locked up in the barn. Turns out it was the goat. Go figure. I can’t wait to see what Sophia will grow up to be… Happy Birthday Sweetie!

COMBINATION

The combination of drawing and writing is working for me.

INCOHERENCE

Go see yesterdays post… it’s just the opposite. I’m coming unglued. But here is my blind drawing of Jessica’s ukulele

and then me looking at the ukulele.
food for thought: I’ve got nothing.

COHERENCE

The coherence of all these words in my brain might be pushing the envelope. But I could lick it shut, which might help.

Happy Birthday Zack!

Zack is my nephew… I haven’t seen him in quite a few years. Gosh, it’s probably been about ten years now. The last time I did see him, he was so tall. Prior to that he was a little tiny thing. They do grow fast. I think he has to be somewhere around my daughter’s age. Seems like when they were all little and played together, he was in that age bracket somewhere, so I’d guess he’s early-mid 20s by now. I don’t know if you’ll see this… I have no address to send a card… but you’re thought of on your birthday. Hope it’s a good one.

BOND

There’s something quite satisfying when you bond with someone, especially with someone you just meet.

DISJUNCTION

There’s been many a disjunction in my life. But I’m better for it.

food for thought: break all to smithereens…

When my girls and I went to Joplin for my friend Geoff’s memorial service, Jessica made a CD with a variety of songs on it. One was “ Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox. Jessica said she remembered when they were all little and I drove them to school, we’d all rock out to this song. I couldn’t remember. Surprise.
But tell me what you think when you hear this song…

JUNCTION

One of the words listed in the thesaurus is “hookup” for the word junction, and so this one is for you Casey. I’ve used the term hookup loosely telling Casey that maybe he and his friend could hookup. He’d roll his eyes at me and sigh, “Mom, please. I won’t be hooking up with her.”

And what does the locket (below) have to do with anything? Well, it came 'unhooked' and I lost the little handmade book inside that my daughter Rita made me. Wah.

SIMPLENESS

The thesaurus also says: ‘See mixture’ and then states: Freedom from Mixture. – This to me seems odd. I guess if something involves simpleness or simplicity, there’s no need to stir anything in to the mix. Unless you make rice krispie treats, but those are simple, and simply good!

food for thought: I’m sure I’m giving a glowing look at how unintelligent I am. Dur. However, I never did claim to be a genius. But now for the serious business: do you like rice krispie treats?

MIXTURE

I am a mixture of all my past lives and I want to learn from them all.

REMAINDER

For the remainder of my life, I hope to always give with love.

Happy Birthday Josh! Happy Father's Day!

It is hard to believe that this little stinker is 16 today. From the day he was born, Josh was the most quiet and best kid… still is. His mom (my sister), Josh and myself took an eight hour drive to visit another niece. Not once, and I repeat, not once did Josh say, “Are we there yet?”  Josh was about nine, maybe. I can’t remember, but the age where it would be so typical to hear, “Are we there yet?” or any kind of whining. But not one whine out of him. I’m serious. We stopped at some antique store—Ruth and I browsing our little hearts out, Josh following. He picked up an item and asked his mom, “Can I have this?” She said, “No.” He put it back and didn’t say a word. I was dumbfounded. What? No tantrum? No pleading? No begging? I kid you not. I waited the entire trip for him to whine about something and he didn’t… not until I pushed his button. So that was my fault. The kid loved to run, so anytime we stopped at a rest area, Josh would just run around. One time, for fun, I shouted, “Run, Forest, run.” He gave me a stern look and in the same tone said, “My name’s not Forest.” The was the extent of his sass. The trip was quite unforgettable, especially for Forest… err, I mean, Josh. I sang most of the way… trying to get Josh to sing along with me. It didn’t work. I told you he was quiet. He later nicknamed me LLL (Loud Loony Lynn). Josh, you’re adorable and I hope you have the best 16th birthday!

And to all the father’s out there…
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

ADJUNCT/DECREMENT

Two words, because you see they are both #39.
Adjunct – also see addition, but as a noun it says: tab, tag, flap, lug, lapel, apron, fly, tuck, lap…
go figure, I say.
Decrement—also see deduction.

food for thought: I’m kind of an apron freak. What about you?

Happy Moving Forward Brother Brian!

I’ve only recently got to know Brother Brian when I took one of his sketch/journaling workshops, which has inspired me to draw (every day! hence, the posts here since April). The last time I saw Brother Brian, I found out that he will be relocating. I said something about ‘going away’ and he didn’t correct me necessarily, but restated it as “moving forward.” I hadn’t thought about it that way, and I like it. Today is not the day he is moving forward, but it is the day I will get to see him and say “best of luck in moving forward.” Check out his blog: abz paperless sketchbook journal.

This sketch is on part of a wall in my 'writing room' and something on this wall Brother Brian created...

DEDUCTION

I’d like to see a deduction in the amount of dust bunnies that float around in this house.

ADDITION

With the addition of exercise in my daily routine, I still can’t say I like it.

food for thought: “Add little to little and there will be a great heap.”—Ovid

and let me just add, (pun intended) that I have been adding little to little (exercise) and I’m still a great heap… so it’s true.

Happy Birthday Donna!

I met Donna through blogging. I was a bit intimidated by Donna until I found out about a dinner she had with a co-worker/friend. They started talking about writing and publishing. Her co-worker said that her cousin writes too and it turns out that cousin was me! I figured if Donna knew Janice (my cousin), then maybe there wasn’t a need for me to be intimidated because I knew Janice wouldn’t be friends with someone who wasn’t likeable. The more I get to know Donna, the sweeter I find her to be. It also goes to show you what a small world it is… Happy Birthday Donna! (I’m only guessing at your birthdate, since you didn’t tell me – other than it was in June.)

DECREASE

I’d certainly be quite pleased if when I got on the scale, that number decreased.

food for thought: What would you like to decrease in your life?

Happy Birthday Sioux!

I just love Sioux’s sass and spunk. You’ll get the idea when you check out her blog, Sioux’s Pages. She also cracks me up. She makes me want to add more humor to my writing, but I can’t do it like she can. Sioux keeps me in line at our critique meetings… that of which I’m totally grateful for. Sioux has a most generous heart and I’m blessed to be her friend.

INCREASE

There are many ways in which we can increase our knowledge. How do you increase your knowledge?

Happy Birthday Linda! Happy Birthday Cale!

Happy Birthday Linda!
You can get an idea of what Linda is all about by taking a look at her blog, Write From the Heart. I meant to write Queen Chic on her cake because she is published in so many Chicken Soup for the Soul books. I’m sure she is one of the top peeps in the CS books. But that’s not all she’s published in. Check out the side bar on her blog and you’ll be just amazed as I am. Not only that, she’s sweet, generous, fun and all round great person. I’m glad to be her friend.

Happy Birthday Cale!
Cale is my great nephew. I think he’s 20 today. I don’t get to see him often, but every time I do, he’s grown… and by golly, he’s an adult now... well he has been. I just dusted off a picture of him and his siblings and he was about five, so I tend to always think of them as really young. I think it's time for an updated photo. Cale is a good looking and sweet young man. I had to cheat and find out from his grandma what to put on his cake… she didn’t say race car, but it was easier to draw than a regular car… well for me anyway.

INFERIORITY

Inferiority is more relatable to me than yesterday’s word. Play second fiddle, take a back seat, not fit to hold a candle to.

SUPERIORITY

I’m amazed at the many definitions of superiority, but I like the slang version: beat the band or take the cake. The word superiority has an air about it so I prefer “reach a new high.” Isn’t that what we try and do in life in bettering ourselves?

food for thought: In what ways have you reached a new high?

SMALLNESS

I have two printer drawers which I have tiny things in their slots. I’m always on the look out for small-ness. During a sheep festival that my daughter and sister attended, I received this tiny sheep. It represents smallness.

food for thought: What’s the smallest thing you have?
